An evening dedicated to soil, flavour & Health

from soil to plate

about soiltalks

SoilTalks was born from two old friends — Kerttu Tammik and Peeter Pihel — who share a lifelong love for soil, food, and the stories that connect them. What started as a simple idea between friends soon grew into a travelling conversation series, carrying soil-centered dialogue across countries, landscapes, and seasons.

SoilTalks was created to bring soil into the heart of public discussion — not only as an agricultural resource, but as a cultural, ecological, and human foundation. Each event gathers farmers, chefs, scientists, policymakers, and local communities around one central belief: the quality of our soil shapes the quality of our lives.

Through open conversations and shared meals, SoilTalks invites people to rediscover the profound links between soil health, food systems, climate resilience, culture, and human wellbeing. The aim is simple but urgent: to make soil a subject everyone feels connected to.

Soil Talks starts with a Conversation moderated by Kerttu Tammik on the vital link between soil and human health. We will explore how farming and food choices impact our wellbeing, aiming to bring soil into clear conversation from field to society.

The conversation is followed by A Dinner Rooted in Earth crafted by Chefs Peeter Pihel and Kristo Malm for Northern Roots. Inspired by regenerative agriculture, the menu features shared fermented bites, a comforting slow-cooked main with earthy sides, and a warm, soothing dessert.

Kerttu tammik

Coordinator of the European Soil Mission and founder of SoilHub Estonia, is the driving force behind SoilTalks. Her work focuses on bridging science, practice, and society — helping people understand that soil health is not just a technical topic, but a shared responsibility that influences food, water, biodiversity, climate stability and public health.

Kerttu’s approach blends scientific clarity with cultural storytelling, making complex soil topics accessible, engaging, and deeply human.

peeter
pihel

One of Estonia’s most influential chefs, a champion of sustainable gastronomy, and a Michelin Green Star pioneer — brings the culinary dimension to SoilTalks. His philosophy is rooted in respect for landscapes, farmers, and the ecosystems that shape flavour.

For Peeter, soil is not an abstract concept: it is the beginning of every ingredient, every dish, and every story on the plate. His collaborations with local producers and regenerative farmers have made him a leading voice in connecting soil health with taste, nourishment, and food culture.

At SoilTalks, Peeter and fellow chefs transform the evening’s themes into a sensory experience — letting guests taste the impact of healthy soil.
