about regenagri
ReGen AGRI brings together farmers, advisors and agricultural organisations from Estonia, Latvia and Finland to test practical approaches for improving soil health, nutrient use efficiency and farm resilience.
Rather than promoting a single farming system or set of practices, the project works directly with pilot farms. Together with farmers, we identify the main challenges in their fields, test solutions under real farming conditions and evaluate what works, where and why.

ReGen AGRI focuses on three interconnected areas
What are we trying to achieve?
Healthy and well-functioning soils are essential for both productive farming and efficient nutrient use. Soil structure, rooting, biological activity and water movement all influence how effectively crops can access nutrients – and how much is potentially lost from the farming system.
Better soil function
Improving soil structure, rooting conditions and water-holding capacity to create more resilient production systems.
Smarter nutrient cycling
Increasing nutrient use efficiency by improving nutrient cycling and matching inputs more closely with crop needs.
Fewer nutrient losses
Testing practical ways to retain nutrients within the farming system and reduce losses to the surrounding environment.
Northern Roots in ReGen AGRI
Northern Roots works directly with Estonian pilot farms, helping farmers translate soil and plant observations into practical experiments.
Our role includes:
- farm-level advisory support;
- soil and crop diagnostics;
- designing and following pilot activities;
- supporting trials related to nutrient cycling and soil function;
- facilitating farmer-to-farmer and international knowledge exchange;
- communicating practical experiences and results.
Our advisors include Olivier de Schaetzen, working primarily with arable farming systems, and Airi Külvet, supporting activities related to grasslands, livestock farming and nutrient cycling.
The goal is not to prescribe a universal recipe. It is to help farmers understand their own system well enough to make better decisions.
